Definition - What does Sthitaprajna mean?

Sthitaprajna is a Sanskrit term that means “contented,” “calm” and “firm in judgment and wisdom.” It is a combination of two words: sthita, meaning “existing,” “being” and “firmly resolved to,” and prajna, meaning “wise,” “clever” and “intelligent.”

In the Bhagavad Gita, sthitaprajna refers to a man of steady wisdom. The yogi is described in Sloka 55 as a sthitaprajna when he “renounces completely all the desires of the mind, when he is fully satisfied with his mind fixed in Atman.”

Yogapedia explains Sthitaprajna

The sthitaprajna is also known as a jivanmukta (one who is liberated while still living an earthly life) in some traditions and can be referred to a free soul or self.

According to the Gita, a sthitaprajna:

  • Is free from worldly attachments and aversions
  • Does not need to seek the truth because he sees truth
  • Is free from motives and ego
  • Has attained full knowledge of the Ultimate Reality
  • Does good deeds with no expectations of reward
  • Is aware of the oneness of Reality.
  • The question arose in the mind of Arjuna who asks Shri Krishna how a “Sthita Prajnya” is intellectually equanimous, self aware, conduct himself through shloka 55 in chapter 2 of Saankhya Yoga of Bhagavadgeeta.

    Arjuna Uvaacha

    Sthitaprajnyasya kaa bhaashaa samaadhistasya keshava

Sthitaadhih kim prabhaasheta kim aaseeta vrajeta kim

Arjuna said: What are the characteristics of the man established in awareness, firmly established in wisdom, and who is equanimous in his intellect, O Krishna? How does he speak being established in awareness? How does he rest or how does he move about?

In Madhwacharya’s Geeta Bhashya, the word Sthitaprajnya is described in chaste Sanskrit as: Sthitaa-Prajnyaa-Jnyaanam Yasya Sa Sthitaprajnya:|| This refers to a person whose awareness is well established.

Which “jnyaana” is the Sthita Prajnya supposed to be aware of? Jnyaana in context of Geeta Bhashya is that Brahma is the creator, the source of knowledge of the innumerable perfect qualities of Mahavishnu, pursued by many in their own ways, for instance like by Rudra when he traveled to Kailaasa to seek the grace of Mahavishnu, as described in Harivamsha. Kim Aseeta transcends to Kim Pratyaaseet, in the Bhaashya, which means - for what purpose does the Sthita Prajnya rests. In short Arjuna wants to know in depth about Sthita Prajnya.

Verse 55, Chapter II, Saankhya Yoga, Bhagavadgeeta

PRAJAHATI YADA KAMAAN SARVAAN PAARTHA MANOGATAAN
    ATMANY EVATMANA TUSHTAHA STHITAPRAJNAS TADOCHYATE

Meaning: The Resplendent Lord said: When a man discards all the desires of his mind, O Arjuna, when his Self is content in his own Self, then he is called one well established in wisdom.

Bhaashya entails how to differentiate between a Sthitaprajnya and a normal human being, while both may look just as normal human beings do. The Sthitaprajnya, as per the Bhaashya, is described progressively as:

    1. the one who discards all desires, after realization of the Lord (described as vision), like Shuka
    2. the one who realizes Brahma jnyaana with the grace of Lord,
    3. the one who is supremely contented due to his realization and devotion and commitment to keep performing his duty in reverence to his Lord.
    4. the one who remains unattached to result materialistically, yet as something that fulfills his desire to attain grace of Lord continually
    5. the one who, as a result of consistency in performing his actions therefore, achieves a distinctive state of consciousness as though he is in a Samaadhi.
    6. the one who, is in constant equanimity (samaadhi), quelling desires by confronting them with wisdom, contradicting them and destroying them, with assistance of Supreme Self.

Sthita Prajnya is thus explained in complete detail in Geeta Bhaashya convincingly.

Purandara dasa who had become a pious medicant travelled all over south India singing the praise of the Lord in all the religious spots. While at Hampi he heard a group of people singing a beautiful composition he enquired who had composed the song, on being mentioned Parama Sree Vaishnava Sri Tallaapaka Annamacharya had rendered this song to Vittalla when he visited this temple and so we sing it now. Purandara dasa had already heard of this great devotee he was even more anxious to meet him so he hastened to meet the Nandavarika saint at Tirumala immediately. He visited the temple and seeing the Lord he sang the Lords praise in many a song. Contended he then proceeded to Talapakka, even as he approached the town he heard the rendering of a melodious song from the Chinnakesava temple. He heard all of the nectar flowing out of the great saints tongue and seeing the divine form of the saint decked with the 12 Urdhva Pundra shankha chakra mudras and the nalinaksha mala he fell at the great Annammaya's feet saying Purandara is your disciple. Annamayya too had heard of Purandara dasa and was so pleased to see him in person he hugged him with all the warmth. Both welcomed the other and happily spent time adoring their Lord spoke about his deeds and sang many a song. Even thinking of it now gives so much joy one can imagine what they must have felt.

day after diwali.

Balipratipada commemorates the annual return of Mahabali to earth and the victory of Vamana – one of many creative incarnations of Vishnu and the fifth incarnation in the Dashavatara list. It marks the victory of Vishnu over Mahabali and all asuras, through his metamorphosis into Trivikrama.

Bali Pratipada or Bali Padyami is observed the day after Diwali in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Here is the story associated with the festival.

King Bali was a very powerful demon (daitya) king. He was the most famous king and there was peace and prosperity in his Kingdom. He became so powerful that the entire world was under his control. He then attacked Indra and pushed him out and occupied Indraloka (heaven ruled by demigods).

Bali wanted to have the seat of Indra (Indra Padavi) permanently. As per his guru Shukracharya’s advice he started performing Ashwamedha Yajna. He completed 99 Ashwamedha Yagnas. If he completes the 100th he will be eligible for the post of Indra.

Indra sought the help of Vishnu to avoid him being dethroned by King Bali. Aditi, the mother of Indra, also performed tapas to get back her son’s lost glory.

Lord Vishnu assured that He himself will come to rescue of Indra. For this divine mission, Lord Vishnu was born as Vamana, the dwarf. In this incarnation Vishnu was the son of Aditi.

Lord Vishnu grew up fast and got his upanayanam done and went to King Bali, where he was conducting the 100th Ashwamedha Yajna.

On seeing the handsome face of Vamana in the Yajna, King Bali came to Vamana and did Sashtanga namaskara and prayed him to take some “daana” (gift) from him. He also told him that whatever Vamana demands, he would give.

He asked him whether Vamana would like to have land, elephants, horses, jewels, etc. For everything Vamana said “NO”.

Vamana also praised King Bali for his good and reminded him that his great grandfather Prahlada was a great Vishnu devotee, and also praised Hiranyakashipu-Hiranyaksha about their power and determination.

Finally Vamana demanded just three steps of land; and He said He would like to measure it all by himself.

Bali was surprised “You are asking only three steps, that too in your steps. What you will get.” He asked him to demand some better items instead of these three steps, thinking that the three steps would be a meager Daana Dharma.

Vamana said he was satisfied with the three steps of land.

By that time, King Bali’s Guru, Shukracharya, realized that the little Brahmin is Vishnu. He told Bali not to give the daana, as the gods had sent Vishnu to take away everything he had. Bali refused to hear his advice and said what more glory can I get than fulfilling Daana Dharma demanded of Srihari Vishnu.

An angry Guru Shukracharya cursed him to lose everything.

Soon King Bali did the sankalpa and agreed to the three steps of land as asked by Vamana.

Soon, the short roopa of Vamana grew in size – so huge that it was impossible to describe in words – to be called as Trivikrama Roopa.

With his first step, Vamana covered all of Earth. His second step covered all of the Sky. There was no place for the third step and King Bali offered his Head.

Vamana sent Bali to Patala Loka or Underworld.

He was also given the boon that he will be allowed to rule the entire universe for one day in a year and on that day he can visit the earth, which is the Balipadyami day – the Kartik Shukla Pratipada Tithi - the day after Diwali.
