16 ayuh texts

There were many Ayurvedic texts, but not all texts are available now. Brahma asked 16 persons to write texts on Ayurveda, said Velukkudi Krishnan, in a discourse. Each of them wrote a text. Dhanvantari, an avatara of Lord Narayana, wrote Cikitsa Tattva Vijnana; Divodasa wrote Cikitsa Darpana; Kasi raja wrote Cikitsa Kaumudi; The two Aswini Kumaras wrote Cikitsa Saara Tantra. The Aswini Kumaras are the physicians of the Devas. The Pandava brothers were each born with the grace of different devatas. Thus, Arjuna was born through the blessing of Indra, Bhima through the blessing of Vayu and so on. Nakula and Sahadeva were born through the blessings of the Aswini Kumaras, and true to their inheritance, Nakula and Sahadeva too were well versed in medicine. Nakula wrote an Ayurvedic work called Vaidyaka Sarvasva; Sahadeva wrote Vyaadhi Sindhu Vimardhana. Yama, the god of death, also wrote a book on Ayurveda! Another name for Yama is Arti, and Arti wrote Jnaanaarnava.

So, Dhanvantari, Divodasa, Kasi Raja, Aswini Kumaras (two in number), Nakula, Sahadeva and Arti together wrote eight works. Another eight works were written by others. Sage Chyavanah wrote Jeeva Daana; Janaka wrote Vaidhya Sandeha Bhanjana; Budha wrote Sarvasaara; Jaabala wrote Tantra Saara; Jaajali wrote Vedanga Saara; Pyla wrote Nidaana, exploring the causes of diseases; Karatha wrote Sarvadhara; and sage Agastya wrote Dhvaidhanirnaya Tantra.

An Ayurvedic treatise called Bhavaprakasa says that its purpose is to increase the life span of human beings.

So, Ayurveda is focused on studying the causes of diseases and curing them. And yet, while the purpose of Ayurveda is to give human beings longevity, physicians and surgeons are not masters of life. Longevity or otherwise is in the hands of Lord Narayana.

You are more inclined to want to break away from the tried and true and enter the world of the unknown. It is important that you guard against being too dominant, or too opinionated and that you avoid any sense of false pride. While it is important that you learn to be tolerant, it is equally important that you don’t lose your individuality. Too many ‘A’s’ in a name may create a domineering and controlling person as well as lending itself to sarcasm, cynicism, intolerance and criticism towards others. There is a health caution in that too many ‘A’s’ may also create health issues with the head.

Shri Radhikashtakam Meaning:

1) When will Sri Radhika, who is a splendid ruby in the crown of all nectarean doe-eyed girls, a swan swimming in the lake of love for jubilant Lord Krsna, and a celestial vine sprouted from Vraja’s exalted King Vrsabhanu, bathe me in Her service?

2) When will Sri Radhika, who makes the sash of bells dance on Her hips splendid with red silk, and whose necklace of large pearls plays on the waterpots of Her breasts, bathe me in Her service?

3) When will Sri Radhika, who is as splendid as a great lotus whorl, who is new nectar mixed with the camphor of youth, and whose bimba fruit lips blossom with a gentle smile, bathe me in Her service?

4) When will Sri Radhika, who, accidentally meeting restless Krsna in the outskirts of the forest, stared at Him with suspicious eyes as He cast amorous glances at Her and flattered Her with many sweet and gentle words, bathe me in Her service?

5) When will Sri Radhika, who the girls of Vraja love as much as their own lives, who the gopa queen Yasoda loves as much as Lord Krsna, and who makes the heart of charming Lalita blossom with love, bathe me in Her service?

6) When will Sri Radhika, who in the company of Visakha at the forest’s edge strings a Vaijayanti garland from the flowers of many trees, and who is the beautiful beloved resting on Lord Krsna’s handsome chest, bathe me in Her service?
7) When will Sri Radhika, who smelling the fragrance of Lord Krsna and hearing the sweet sounds of His flute, ran to Him in the forest grove and, scratching Her ears, approached Him with smiling eyes and lowered face, bathe me in Her service?

8) When will Sri Radhika, who on a summer evening happily plays with Lord Krsna by Her own lake cooled by breezes touching the many splendid lotuses, bathe me in Herservice?

9) Pleased with any person who, abandoning all hope of material happiness and overwhelmed with love, reads this sweet Sri Radhastaka with a pure heart, the prince of Vrajaof His own accord places him among Sri Radha’s personal associates.

Shri Jagannath Ashtakam was composed by Adi Sankracharya in praise of Lord Jagannath on his visit to Puri. The most important of hymns of Lord Jagannath, the Ashtakam was recited by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu on his visit to Jagannath temple. The merit of reciting the sacred Jagannath ashtakam carefully is such that, one becomes sinless and pure hearted and gains entrance to Vishnuloka.

Lord Jagannath

kadācit kālindī-taṭa-vipina-saṅgīta ta ralo

ramā-śambhu-brahmāmara-pati-gaṇeśārcita-pado

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (1)

Sometimes in great happiness Lord Jagannatha, with His flute, makes a loud concert in the groves on the banks of the Yamuna. He is like a bumblebee who tastes the beautiful lotus-like faces of the cowherd damsels of Vraja, and His lotus feet are worshiped by great personalities such as Lakshmi, Siva, Brahma, Indra and Ganesa. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

भुजे सव्ये वेणुं शिरसि शिखिपिच्छं कटितटे

sadā śrīmad-vṛndāvana-vasati-līlā-paricayo

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (2)

In His left hand Lord Jagannatha holds a flute. On His head He wears the feathers of peacocks and on His hips He wears fine yellow silken cloth. Out of the corners of His eyes He bestows sidelong glances upon His loving devotees and He always reveals Himself through His pastimes in His divine abode of Vrindavana. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

Residing on the shore of the great ocean, within a large palace situated upon the crest of the brilliant, golden Nilacala Hill, along with His powerful brother Bala-bhadra, and in the middle of Them His sister Subhadra, Lord Jagannatha bestows the opportunity for devotional service upon all godly souls. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (4)

Lord Jagannatha is an ocean of mercy and He is beautiful like a row of blackish rain clouds. He is the storehouse of bliss for Lakshmi and Saraswati, and His face is like a spotless full-blown lotus. He is worshiped by the best of demigods and sages, and His glories are sung by the Upanishads. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

रथारूढो गच्छन् पथि मिलित भूदेव पटलैः

jagannāthah svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (5)

When Lord Jagannatha is on His Ratha-yatra cart and is moving along the road, at every step there is a loud presentation of prayers and songs chanted by large assemblies of brahmanas. Hearing their hymns Lord Jagannatha is very favorably disposed towards them. He is the ocean of mercy and the true friend of all the worlds. May that Jagannatha Swami, along with His consort Lakshmi, who was born from the ocean of nectar, be the object of my vision.

परंब्रह्मापीड़ः कुवलय-दलोत्‍फुल्ल-नयनो

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (6)

He is the ornament of the head of Lord Brahma and His eyes are like the full-blown petals of the lotus. He resides on the Nilacala Hill, and His lotus feet are placed on the heads of Ananta Deva. Lord Jagannatha is overwhelmed by the mellow of love and He becomes joyful in the embracing of the body of Sri Radharani, which is like a cool pond. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

न वै याचे राज्यं न च कनक माणिक्य विभवं

न याचेऽहं रम्यां सकल जन काम्यां वरवधूम् ।

sadā kāle kāle pramatha-patinā gīta-carito

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (7)

I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for gold, rubies, and wealth. I do not ask for an excellent and beautiful wife as desired by all men. I simply pray that Jagannatha Swami, whose glories are always sung by Lord Siva, be the constant object of my vision.

हर त्वं संसारं द्रुततरम् असारं सुरपते

हर त्वं पापानां विततिम् अपरां यादवपते ।

अहो दीनेऽनाथे निहित चरणो निश्चितमिदं

jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me (8)

O Lord of the demigods, please quickly remove this useless material existence I am undergoing. O Lord of the Yadus, please destroy this vast ocean of sins which has no shore. Alas, this is certain that Lord Jagannatha’s lotus feet are bestowed upon those who feel themselves fallen and have no shelter in this world but Him. May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision.

The self-retrained, virtuous soul who recites these eight verses glorifying Lord Jagannatha becomes cleansed of all sins and duly proceeds to Lord Visnu's abode.

We have a tradition of revering Acharyas who have an abundance of knowledge. In fact, a sishya will not ask his Acharya any question, for he knows that if something is ambiguous, his Acharya will give him clarifications. And yet, there have been occasions when sishyas have asked their Acharyas questions. Their Acharyas too have been magnanimous enough to answer them. These fruitful exchanges between teacher and taught have been useful to later generations of devotees in understanding many things, said Akkarakkani Srinidhi in a discourse.

Nanjeeyar used to ask his Acharya Parasara Bhatta questions which the latter answered patiently. One day Nanjeeyar asked Bhatta why the Sastras forbid the offering of Kantakari flowers to Vishnu. Bhatta replied that the Kantakari plant has plenty of thorns, and the Lord is concerned that His devotees, while plucking the flowers, will hurt themselves. The ban on this flower is not because it is unacceptable to Him. It is His concern for His bhakthas that is responsible for the ban on the Kantakari flowers. If Nanjeeyar had not asked his Acharya the question about these flowers, we would not have known why they are not used in worship.

During Ramanujacharya’s discourses on Gadya Traya, his disciple Embar asked him how the Lord could have spoken to him. Embar had no doubts that the Lord would have spoken to Ramanuja. His question was in case future generations had any doubts on this score. Ramanuja gave him a crisp reply. He said that he would not say anything that the Lord had not told him. Whatever he said came from the Lord Himself. Thus we have Ramanujacharya’s assurance on the source of his teachings. They come directly from the Supreme One.
