uruppam.

Bhaktikku uruppam karumamum nanamum mudalilavai solli

sakliyila mandarukku vyartti prapattiyenamatta kalai talli

tiyinil tusay masu nikki vendum anre van alikkum

marai mozinda simadavandaleo saran enre manam kalikkum.

This verse is in classical Tamil and is packed with Srivaishnava philosophical ideas.

From Pillai lokacharyas mumuksupadi.

1. "Bhaktikku uruppam karumamum nanamum mudalilavai solli"

For devotion (bhakti), the required “limbs” or supports are karma (right action, duties) and jnanam (knowledge).

The poet is saying: First, the scriptures tell us that to cultivate bhakti, one must have a foundation of virtuous deeds and right understanding.

2. "Sakliyila mandarukku vyartti prapattiyenamatta kalai talli"

But for those living in this troublesome world (sakalīyila mandar – people in the busy, distracting world), the difficult path of long, elaborate effort (vyartti) is set aside,

And instead, the path of prapatti (complete surrender to the Lord) is prescribed, rejecting other complicated disciplines (matta kalai talli – putting aside other means).

3. "Tiyinil tusay masu nikki vendum anre van alikkum"

Just as gold, when put into fire, loses its dirt and impurities,

In the same way, prapatti burns away one’s sins and defects, leaving only purity.

4. "Marai mozinda simadavandaleo saran enre manam kalikkum."

The Vedas themselves declare that when one bows down at the feet of Śrī (the Divine Mother, inseparable from the Lord) and the Lord, saying “You are my refuge” (śaraṇam enru),

The heart finds bliss (manam kalikkum).

The verse says — The scriptures first describe karma (right action) and jnana (knowledge) as supports for bhakti. But for those in the busy, impurity-filled world, the easier, direct way of surrender (prapatti) is taught, setting aside other difficult means. Like fire purifies gold, prapatti purifies the soul. The Vedas themselves proclaim that bowing to Śrī and the Lord with the words “You are my refuge” gives joy to the heart.
