My son's visit now to Vienna reminded me of her.

Hedy Lamarr — The Hollywood Star Who Helped Shape the Wireless World

History occasionally presents us with individuals who seem to belong to more than one world. Some shine in art, some in science, some in public life. Rarely does one person stand brilliantly in all these realms at once.

Such a person was Hedy Lamarr.

Celebrated by Hollywood as one of its great beauties, admired by audiences across the world, and later recognized for an important contribution to communications technology, Hedy Lamarr lived a life that challenges many of our assumptions about talent, intelligence and human potential.

She was not merely an actress who happened to invent something.

Nor was she a scientist who became famous through cinema.

Remarkably, she was both.

From Vienna to Hollywood

Hedy Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler on November 9, 1914, in Vienna, Austria.

Even as a child, she was intensely curious about how things worked. Her father encouraged her inquisitive nature, explaining machines and mechanisms to her during their walks.

Yet destiny first opened the doors of cinema, not science.

She appeared in European films while still young and attracted international attention after the 1933 film Ecstasy. She later left Europe and travelled to the United States, where film producer Louis B. Mayer brought her into Hollywood.

There she received the name by which the world would know her:

Hedy Lamarr.

Hollywood soon embraced her as a glamorous star. She appeared in films including Algiers, Boom Town, White Cargo and, most famously, Samson and Delilah.

Her beauty became legendary.

But behind the screen image was a woman who loved ideas, machines and invention.

The Inventor Behind the Movie Star

Between films and studio commitments, Lamarr spent time thinking about inventions and practical problems.

She was not formally trained as an engineer, but she possessed something equally valuable to an inventor: curiosity.

She enjoyed taking things apart, understanding mechanisms and imagining how they might be improved.

During the Second World War, her thoughts turned towards helping the Allied war effort.

She had watched events in Europe with deep concern and wanted to contribute in a meaningful way.

Her contribution would come not from a film studio, but from an unexpected partnership.

A Wartime Idea

Lamarr worked with George Antheil, an American avant-garde composer and experimental thinker.

Their problem concerned the radio control of torpedoes.

A remotely guided torpedo could potentially be disrupted if an enemy detected and jammed the radio frequency being used to control it.

So they imagined something different.

Instead of keeping the communication signal on one frequency, the transmitter and receiver could rapidly change frequencies together, following a synchronized pattern.

An enemy trying to interfere with the signal would have a much harder time blocking it.

The idea became known as frequency hopping.

Antheil's experience with synchronized player pianos helped inspire the mechanism they imagined for coordinating the changing frequencies.

In 1942, Lamarr and Antheil were granted a United States patent for their frequency-hopping communication system.

It was an extraordinary idea for its time.

Too Early for Its Era

The invention did not immediately become the military breakthrough they had hoped for.

The technology required to implement their system effectively was not yet readily available, and the invention received little practical attention during the war.

But important ideas do not necessarily disappear simply because their moment has not yet arrived.

The principles behind spread-spectrum and frequency-hopping communication were later developed and used in various communications systems.

Over time, such techniques became important in military communications and later in civilian wireless technologies.

Modern wireless systems are enormously more sophisticated than Lamarr and Antheil's 1940s design, and it would be inaccurate to say that Lamarr directly invented Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or GPS.

But her pioneering work forms part of the fascinating history of spread-spectrum communication, principles that became important to later generations of wireless technology.

That makes her story remarkable enough without exaggerating it.

Beauty Became a Distraction

Perhaps the most fascinating part of Lamarr's story is not the patent itself, but the way people perceived her.

She was so extraordinarily beautiful that the world found it easy to stop looking beyond her face.

Her appearance became her public identity.

Her intelligence remained largely hidden behind it.

She once quipped:

“Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid.”

The remark is funny.

But there is something deeper beneath the humour.

Lamarr understood that people often make assumptions about others from what they see first.

A beautiful woman could be treated as decoration.

A film star could be assumed to have little interest in science.

Yet the same woman could sit down and think seriously about radio communication, synchronization and engineering.

Her life quietly challenged those assumptions.

Recognition Came Slowly

For many years, Lamarr's contribution to technology was not widely known.

Her Hollywood career remained far more famous than her invention.

Only later did greater attention come to her work in communications.

She eventually received recognition from the technological community, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014, more than a decade after her death.

By then, the world had changed enormously.

Wireless communication had become an essential part of modern life.

The idea that a Hollywood actress had helped pioneer an important communications concept seemed almost unbelievable.

But it was true.

A Mind Without a Label

Hedy Lamarr's story invites us to question the categories into which we place people.

Can an artist also be an inventor?

Can a performer think like an engineer?

Can beauty and intellect exist together without one cancelling out the other?

Of course they can.

Perhaps the real lesson is even simpler.

Never mistake the visible part of a person for the whole person.

We see someone's profession, appearance, age or social role and unconsciously construct a complete picture of them.

But every human being may contain abilities that the world has never noticed.

Hedy Lamarr was a movie star.

She was also an inventor.

She was fascinated by technology at a time when few people expected a Hollywood actress to be interested in engineering.

Her story reminds us that creativity does not respect boundaries.

The same mind can imagine a character on a cinema screen and a mechanism in a communications system.

The same person can be captivated by art and fascinated by machines.

Brilliance does not always announce itself in the form we expect.

Sometimes it arrives in a laboratory coat.

Sometimes it arrives carrying a musical score.

And sometimes, remarkably, it walks onto a Hollywood film set.
