Who
Who are You?
During one of his travels, Kalidasa felt very thirsty and looked around for water. He saw a woman drawing water from a well.
He went up to her and asked her for water. She agreed to give him water, but asked him, "Who are you? Introduce yourself."
Now Kalidasa thought that an ordinary village woman was not worthy of knowing who Kalidasa was. So he said, "I am a traveller.(मार्गस्थ)"
But his lady replied, "In this world there are only two travellers – the Sun and the Moon. Both rise and set every day and keep travelling perpetually."
Then Kalidasa said, "Alright then, I am a guest(अतिथि)." The lady promptly replied, "In this world, there are only two guests – Youth and Wealth. Both are temporary and hence can only be called as guests."
Intrigued Kalidasa said, "I am a patient person.(सहनशील) " Now the lady replied, "In this world only two who truly know the meaning of patience – भूमि (Earth) and Tree. How much ever you stamp the earth or throw stones at the tree for the fruits, both continue to nurture us."
Now Kalidasa was completely perplexed. He said, "Fine. I am a stubborn person(हठ)." The lady smiled and said, "There are only two truly stubborn personalities – our nails and our hair. We keep cutting them repeatedly, but they continue to grow."
Kalidasa had been patient so far, but now in anger he said, "I am a fool(मूढ)". Now the lady gave a wide smile and said, "There are only two kinds of fools in this world – a King who rules without having any capability or knowledge and a Minister who is a sycophant to such a King and lavishes praises on such a useless king."
Kalidasa realised that he had been outsmarted. He fell at the feet of the lady and when he touched her feet and then got up, whom did he see?
The old woman said, " Knowledge comes from education and not ego. You only consider the honor and prestige received from knowledge as your achievement and you are arrogant about your knowledge. The world is full of knowledge and still, there are many things to learn.
Maata Saraswati – the Goddess of Learning and Wisdom. She said, "Kalidasa, you are wise. But, only if you know yourself do you become a human being(मनुष्य). A person without any awareness of self has not reached the pinnacle of being a human."

Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple
Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple
The rock fort city of Tiruchirappalli is popularly regarded as a pilgrimage destination for its innumerable temples, churches and mosques dotted across the length and breadth of the district. The neighbourhood of Trichy, Srirangam is a pilgrim's paradise as the island is the proud home of the Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple (foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines, that is, Swayam Vyakta Kshetras of Lord Vishnu and first and foremost among the 108 divya desams).
Srirangam Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal
A pilgrimage to Trichy will not be complete without visiting its historic temples that are considered as spiritual symbols of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Situated just over a kilometre, east of Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple in Srirangam is the renowned Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal koil, one that goes back further to the Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple when Srirangam was called as 'Vellithirumutha gramam'. Subsequently, Srirangam came to be referred as 'Thiruvarangam' after the construction of the Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple.
History of Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple
The Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple was constructed by the Pandya King Vallabhadeva and the temple has a baronial 'vimanam' - the sacred (grand) tower that tops the innermost sanctum sanctorum of Singaperumal. The region was once a dense forest land, bordered by two large natural streams of water, namely River Kaveri to the south and the Kollidam River (Coleroon) to the north. Furthermore, the area was primarily populated by 'rishis' (sages) and their families. From time to time, wild animals of the forests would trouble the families of the sages.
Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple Entrance
Although the sages living in the area featured the ability to burn down the wild animals, they decided not to use it against the animals and to lose the fruits of their 'kadum thavam' (penance). Alternatively, the sages attempted a more serious kind of penance appealing the graces of Lord Narasimha - god of protection and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On noticing the penance of the sages, Lord Narasimha appeared offering auspicious sight (visions of the divine) to the sages.
As per the prayers of the sages, Lord Narasimha stayed there forever with Goddess Lakshmi protecting the people who pray at this place in a dedicated manner. As the almighty himself appeared here in the midst of the dense forest and stuck around to shield the people from danger, injury, destruction, or damage, Lord Narasimha came to be known as ‘Kaatu’ Azhagiya Singa Perumal, where the word Kaatu can literally be translated as forest in English. Several other stories are also stated regarding the history of this temple.
Deities of Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple
The main deity of the Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple in Srirangam is Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal (8 feet tall) who is in a sitting posture facing west. The Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal here is a 'Chaturbhuja Narasimhar' (Narasimhar with four hands). Among the four hands, the two upper hands of the Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal is seen holding a 'sangu chakram' (conch and chakra), while his lower hand is seen in an 'abhaya hastha' posture (blessing posture).
Goddess Mahalakshmi is seen holding a flower and seated on the left lap of Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal. It is extremely important to mention that both the feet of the goddess here can be seen in this temple as Goddess Mahalakshmi is typically seen with her right leg hanging down and the left leg is bent inwards.
Unlike other Hindu temples in the state, the 'urchava/utsava murthy' (festival deity) of the Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple is not found inside the temple complex. Instead, the festival deity of the singa perumal koil is placed inside the Koorathalwar shrine in the Srirangam Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple.
As the Singa Perumal Temple was located in the middle of a dense forest, the festival deity was placed in the Ranganathar Swamy Temple for safety purpose. The age-old tradition of keeping the festival deity of the Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple in Srirangam Sri Ranganathar Swamy Temple is followed even today. The temple also houses a separate shrine for Garudalwar (the divine vahana of Lord Vishnu).
Visit of Nam Perumal to Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple
The urchava/utsava murthy (festival deity) of Srirangam Ranganathar Swamy Temple, known as ‘Namperumal’, visits the Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple every year on the Vijayadashami day (tenth day of Navratri festival). Namperumal from the Srirangam temple is brought through the Eastern Vellai Gopuram in a 'palakku' (palanquin). On Namperumal adorns the outer mandapam of the temple from morning to evening where special poojas are performed.
Evening festivities commence when the sacred bows made of cane and arrows were brought on an elephant through the Chithirai Veedhi of Srirangam. Around 6 PM, Namperumal on his golden horse vahana is posed in front of the Vanni tree (Prosopis cineraria) for the grand event.
After poojas, the much awaited hunting episode is acted out in front of hundreds of thousands of people who usually gather at the Kaatazhagiya Singaperumal Temple with Namperumal releasing the arrows with brass heads in various directions, terminating the life of the Vanniyasura (forest demon), and ensuring the protection of the good. the Singar Koil.

This island of Srirangam is best known for its huge temple for Ranganatha Swami (Vishnu) which is the world’s biggest living temple. However, there are several other shrines in Srirangam, one of them being the Dasavatara Sannidhi, which is close to the Ranganatha Swami temple.
There are temples exclusively dedicated to each of the incarnations (avataras) of Vishnu, even to the first two Matsya (fish) and Kurma (tortoise) in various parts of India. But, it is rare to find a temple which enshrines all the ten incarnations (Dasavatara) of Vishnu, including Matsya and Kurma. The Dasavatara temple, as the name suggests, falls in this rare category, and is perhaps one of the very few where devotees can worship the ten incarnations inside one sanctum.
The main entrance, with a small gopuram, and the central sanctum face east. On entering, one has to pass through two mandapas to reach the principal shrine, which contains the Dasavataras in a row. A rare feature is that the images of Matsya and Kurma are seen in their original forms as a fish and a tortoise respectively and not in their anthropomorphic forms (with the upper part of the body being Vishnu and the lower parts being a fish or tortoise respectively). The images of all the avataras are instone.
In front of the avataras are those of Lakshmi Narasimha, Lakshmi Narayana and Vishvaksena (also called Senai Mudaliar, who is the leader of the army of Vishnu). While those of Lakshmi Narasimha and Vishvaksena are stone images, Lakshmi Narayana is of metal. The front mandapa houses of the sanctums for Thirumangai Azhvar (whose close connection with the Srirangam temple is well known) and one more for the illustrious Sri Vaishnava preceptor (Acharya), Ramanujacharya, who was also very closely connected with the Ranganatha Swami temple. The Dasavatara temple has a spacious outer enclosure (prakaram) wherein is seen the sanctum for Vedanta Desika (another famous Sri Vaishnava Acharya) who was a great poet, philosopher and scholar and whose extant literary works number more than one hundred.

Strange ways.
For the first time in history, a young girl climbed a tree one day as a Princess and descended from it the following day as a Queen. The eye witness who stood guard to her in the forest was from Nainital, India - Jim Corbett.
70 years ago, in 1952, Princess Elizabeth travelled to Kenya's jungle with her husband Prince Philip and spent the night in a secluded treehouse (machan) situated deep within the forest.
Back in the 1930s, a two-room treehouse on a massive 300-year-old fig tree was built in Nyeri as an auxiliary building to the Outspan Hotel when decorated soldier Eric Sherbrooke Walker decided to build one for his lovely wife. Thus the Treetop hotels started their journey.
At that time, another remarkable guy was residing in the cottages of this Kenyan forest. The oldest and arguably most famous national park in Uttarakhand, India was named after him - Jim Corbett, the legendary hunter-naturalist.
The Princess invited him to accompany them to the Treetops.
Jim spent the day with the Princess and Royal party in the tree house. While she observed and filmed elephants and rhinos on her camera, he spoke to the Prince about the Abominable Snowman, and expressed his concern for the King's failing health.
The stunning sunset faded from the horizon. At night, the Princess went to sleep, and Corbett went down to the foot of the 30-foot-ladder. He was ready to guard the Princess through the dark, silent night.
But something was happening in London.
While Princess Elizabeth was sleeping in the treehouse in Kenya, her father King George VI passed away in the middle of the night.
Unaware of what happened that night, the Princess started filming rhinos again, had her breakfast and returned to the royal lodge where she was informed about the news.
Corbett wrote in the visitors' book - “For the first time in the history of the world, a young girl climbed on to a tree one day a Princess and, after having what she described as her most thrilling experience, she climbed down from the tree next day a Queen – God bless her”

O Lord SrI rAma! O Best of men!
Come what may, I shall not leave Your proximity.
Isn't Lord Siva serving as AnjanEya by joining You?
Isn't SEsha serving You in the garb of lakshmaNa?
Isn't the great, wise, excellent sage vasishTha there, as Your benefactor (or family priest)?
Aren't the hordes of celestials serving You by becoming monkeys for Your sake?
Isn’t this tyAgarAja singing Your virtues proclaimed in the Agamas?
Word-by-word meaning
P O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may – may whatever (enta) come (rAni) or may whatever (enta) leave (pOni) me (tanaku) (tanakenta) – I shall not (jAla) leave (viDuva) Your (nI) proximity (centa).
A Isn't (lEdA) Lord Siva – Enemy (ari) of Lord of Death (antaka) (antakAri) – serving (koluva) as AnjanEya (hanumantuDai), by joining (centa jEri) (literally coming near) You (nI)?
O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may, I shall not leave Your proximity.
C1 Isn't (lEdA) SEsha (SEshuDu) – the ornament (bhUshuDu) of Lord Siva (Sivuniki) – serving (koluva) You in the garb (vEshiyai) of lakshmaNa?
O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may, I shall never leave our proximity.
C2 Isn't (lEdA) the great (goppa) vasishTha (vasishThuDu) – the wise (SishTuDu) and the excellent (varishThuDu) among sages (mauni) – there as Your benefactor (or family priest) (hituDugA)?
O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may, I shall not leave Your proximity.
C3 O Best (vara) of men (nara)! Aren't (lEdA) the hordes (gaNamulu) of celestials (sura) serving (koluvaga) You by becoming monkeys (vAnarulai) for Your sake (nIkai)?
O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may, I shall not leave Your proximity.
C4 Isn’t (lEdA) this tyAgarAja (SrI tyAgarAju) singing (pADaga) Your (nI) virtues (guNamulu) proclaimed (uktamagu) in the Agamas (AgamOktamagu)?
O Lord SrI rAma! Come what may, I shall not leave Your proximity.
Notes –
Variations –
2 – centa – cinta : In some books 'cinta' has been adopted and translated as 'thought’ (I shall not abandon Your thought). In the anupallavi and caraNams 1 to 3, SrI tyAgarAja cites examples of persons being in the proximity of SrI rAma. Therefore, 'centa’ – proximity – seems to be the appropriate word. Further 'centa' is more in accordance with prAsa-anuprAsa.
3 – viDuva jAla SrI rAma – viDuva jAla.
8 – koluvaga – koluva.
References –
4 – antakAri hanumantuDai – In the kRti 'ADa mODi galadE’, SrI tyAgarAja states that AnjanEya is an aspect of Siva (SankarAmSuDu). However, in this kRti, he states that Siva himself has taken the form of AnjanEya. The Story of AnjanEya - an aspect of Lord Siva.
7 – sura gaNamulu vAnarulai – Please refer to SrImad vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – bAla kANDa – Chapter 17 for complete details.
Comments -
1 – enta rAna – enta pOni (whatever might come – whatever might leave)– a colloquial usage in Telugu which generally means 'come what may'.
5 – SEshuDu Sivuniki bhUshuDu – SEsha also known as ‘ananta’ is stated to be the couch of vishNu, the snake around the neck of Siva, the ring in the finger of umA and the arm-bracelet of vinAyaka.
6 – hituDu – sage vasishTha was the family priest of King daSaratha and then for SrI rAma. The family priest is called ‘purO-hita’. Therefore, SrI tyAgarAja uses the word ‘hita’ to mean ‘benefactor’ and also ‘family priest’.
