Be yourself then live.

BE YOURSELF

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

— Oscar Wilde

There is something wonderfully liberating about this simple sentence.

We spend so much of life comparing ourselves with others—how they live, what they achieve, what they possess, how they look, and what people think of them.

But no one else can live our particular life.

We do not have to become someone else to make our life meaningful. We only have to become more fully ourselves.

And perhaps that is what makes the second Wilde quote so powerful:

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

Living is not merely breathing, working, eating and passing through the days.

It is noticing.

Watching the rain.

Feeling the morning breeze.

Standing quietly at sunrise.

Listening to thunder.

Laughing with someone we love.

Being curious about the world.

Being grateful for another ordinary day.

Perhaps a meaningful life is not necessarily a spectacular one.

It is a life in which we are present for our own lives.

Be yourself.

And then, while being yourself, remember to actually live.
