Norway

Norway in a nutshell a must take trip. Will update. If I find the photographs.

Dubai Paris England Switzerland Germany USA Canada 1981.

Well the Helsenki Museum article seems to have opened the pandoras box and in flowed the memory of all our foreign visits.

The seven countries was our ever first foreign tour way back in 1981. The 40 day tour was actually cruel for we had left behind our six month old son. Communication had not developed so much so I used to go to the phone booths or kiosks and make calls back home to enquire about his welfare.

Our first stop was Dubai. We were amazed at the airport to see gold displayed so openly. Actually the whole view from the aircraft itself was one of a sparkling city. We bought our first professional camera at the airport itself. That picture of the airport at Dubai still stored some where in my little brain. I asked my husband is this real gold why are they selling it like this. Now I know. No we did not buy gold. We had a long trip to cover.

After Dubai was Paris Eiffel tower, Norte dame cathedral, Love museum, Arc de Trampe, on the way to which we had our roadside Chai, paid a fortune for two cups of tea. The most expensive tea ever. I was incharge of all the money right from the very first day after I got married I was to manage the finances. A great idea of Narsim, that was when I learnt to be stringent with cash learned how to spend and how much to save etc. ( my mother was stunned and mentioned it when she visited us in 1982 saying she could not believe I was the same girl) I was careful. After marriage we learnt to consider saving for the future. Now a days they spend without thinking. There is no thought of the morrow at all. Well.

After Paris our two three trips through was some how on Tuesdays when the museum's were closed. But the Paris girls were beautiful and I was first time experiencing other cultures and people. It's a beautiful city and we were flored by what we saw. Huge gardens a few .... can't remember except for phone booths.

Next stop was London by now we were missing Indian food already. Looked for Indian restaurant found one in the by lane had idly dose. Saw the Big Ben Tusards museum London tower etc some Shakespeare plays. Dance drama thearetical exposure for the first time. We decided no shopping only things to see. Then we had a long stop at Germany 15 days we stayed with a German family his wife was a Sri Lankan and they had three children two girls and a boy. Lovely family. We 3 couples stayed with them as house guests.

In the basement the room adjoining the store room for the family had a small pantry type kitchen counter so that was where we made our breakfast. We were free to access their store for things like milk bread cornflakes etc

Sunder murthy and his wife Usha took the basement. The house was vertically built first floor was the family kitchen and one small room may be study. The couple had converted it to their bedroom. 2nd floor was master bed room and children's room. we took the rather they accommodated us there and on the 4th floor the attic was given to Deepak and his wife shallu. Who was known to me from childhood. They were a Punjabi couple and food loving. 15 days there. The children were amazing responsible and quiet independent they had a pool in the back yard and a tree house for the children. We enjoyed playing with them the had pet squirrels. And made lot of noise next door to our room. Parents came scrapping up to caution them. We were least fussy Usha made upama etc for breakfast. We were quiet happy with cornflakes oats I loved my husband called it horse food. But he did not complain. The Deepaks shall especially was home sick and craved non veg food crazy over sausages. They just stopped when they saw a kiosk or restaurant serving sausages. Usha loved chocolate waffles there was a small kiosk making fresh waffles she used to drag me to that shop while the men were away at emmo fair their company stall for the international exhibition which they were visiting and learning their jobs mechanical engineering related. They came back by 3 30 4 then we planned visiting the other areas of west Germany.

After Germany we both went to Swidzerland alps and other places for 3 days back to Paris Macys where I bought my first makeup kit enroute to USA. New Jersey where we stayed for 5 days travelling to New York and looking around toys are us. Where we bought toys for Navnith. I missed him very much. Last stop was Toronto to see the Niagara from Canadian side. We stayed in a motel by the falls and spent two days there. Little sight seeing no no dropping except for some clothes for Navnith and toys and yes of course the lovely make up kit. It had a small palm sized pouch which could accommodate compact powder and foundation plus a lipstick. I loved the travel pouch make up and used it extensively. .which got stolen on our next foreign trip. Alas it was again in Paris I think.

Back home to Chennai and rushed to Hyderabad to bring back Navnith. Had to postpone my return for the child just refused to come to me. Served me right. I can't forgive myself for leaving him then. We all suffered. Passified him with the new toys. His children used them too. All well that goes well. Will load pictures on finding them surprised at how much I remembered of that trip.
