Swami Alavandar, an erudite scholar, great Acharya and philosopher, is well-known as Yamunacharya. His most prominent work is Chatushloki. Chatus means four, sloki means hymns. That is, the four slokas in praise of Goddess Mahalakshmi, said Tirukudanthai Dr. Venkatesh in a discourse. Periyavachan Pillai and Swami Vedanta Desika composed scholarly commentary on the work of Alavandar’s Chatushloki. Periyavachan Pillai, in his commentary, explains that every Sri Vaishnava should recite and contemplate nine sacred teachings every day as part of their spiritual practice. The first three constitute the Rahasya Trayam, the three sacred secrets. They are the Thirumantra, the Dvaya Mantra, and the Charama Sloka from the Bhagavad Gita. The fourth and fifth are the two Varaha Charama slokas spoken by Lord Varaha to Bhoomi Devi (Mother of Earth).
The remaining four, making up the sixth through the ninth, are the Chatushloki, the four verses composed by Swami Alavandar. The first verse explains Goddess Mahalakshmi’s supreme sovereignty. Her divine spouse is the supreme Lord Narayana Himself. The second verse narrates Her infinite glory and forgiveness. Alavandar highlights that Goddess Lakshmi’s grace and glory are so vast that even Lord Narayana cannot set boundaries. The third verse expounds the power of Her glance from the corner of an eye known as “Lakshmi Kataksham”. Alavandar focuses on the transformative power of Goddess Lakshmi’s side glance. A single gracious look from Her blesses devotees with unending spiritual and temporal abundance. In the final and fourth verse, Alavandar explains how Mother Lakshmi accompanies Lord Narayana across all dimensions and incarnations. Goddess Lakshmi manifests in a form perfectly corresponding to Him, ensuring that Her divine grace is always available to protect and delight all devotees.
The Varaha Charama Slokam is a sacred verse from the Varaha Purana where Lord Varaha promises salvation to those who remember Him, forming one of the three ultimate verses of surrender (Charama Slokas) in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
