ŚIVA — शिव

The Auspicious

Śiva is a word we know so well that we may forget to ask what it originally means.

The Sanskrit word śiva carries meanings such as auspicious, benevolent, gracious, blessed and conducive to well-being.

It is also, of course, the name of Lord Śiva.

But in the Māṇḍūkya Upanishad, when Turīya is described as “śāntam, śivam, advaitam”, śivam is used in its adjectival sense—auspicious, benign, blessed—alongside śāntam, peaceful, and advaitam, non-dual.

This gives the word a beautiful depth.

Śiva is not merely the absence of disturbance.

Something may be quiet and yet not be auspicious.

Something may be peaceful and yet not bring well-being.

Śivam suggests something inherently good,benevolent , wholesome and auspicious.

And when the Upanishad places it beside śāntam and advaitam, the three words create a remarkable picture:

Śāntam — Peaceful
Śivam — Auspicious
Advaitam — Non-dual

The destination of the spiritual search is being pointed towards as something peaceful, auspicious and beyond duality.

There is also something deeply beautiful in the word's connection with Lord Śiva.

The name of the deity itself carries the sense of the auspicious one.

Thus Śiva is both a name and a quality.

It reminds us that the sacred is not merely powerful.

It is auspicious.

Not merely beyond the world.

But that which ultimately leads towards freedom from sorrow and limitation.

This makes Śiva particularly beautiful as a Word World.

A familiar divine name suddenly opens another dimension:

Before it becomes a name we worship,

it is a word that tells us something about what is auspicious, what is benevolent, what is blessed.

And perhaps there is a lesson hidden here for ordinary life.

We often call something successful because it gives us what we want.

But the deeper question is:

Is it truly śiva?

Does it bring goodness?

Does it bring harmony?

Does it uplift?

Does it lead towards peace?

That is a very different measure of success.

ŚIVA

Auspicious.
Benevolent.
Blessed.
Peaceful in the deepest sense.

A word that became a divine name.

A name that carries a philosophy.

A word carrying a world.
