In the opening Sarga of the Bāla Kāṇḍa (1.1.8–11), Sage Nārada gives Vālmīki a remarkably precise description of Śrī Rāma’s physical appearance. It is almost a portrait in words.
Nārada's description of Rāma
1.1.9
Buddhimān nītimān vāgmī śrīmāñ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ |
Vipulāṃso mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvo mahāhanuḥ ||
Meaning:
He is intelligent, wise in conduct, eloquent and glorious, the destroyer of enemies. He has broad shoulders, mighty arms, a neck shaped like a conch, and strong, prominent cheeks/jaw.
Then Nārada continues:
1.1.10
Mahorasko maheṣvāso gūḍhajatruḥ arindamaḥ |
Ājānubāhuḥ suśirāḥ sulalāṭaḥ suvikramaḥ ||
Meaning:
He has a broad and powerful chest, is a great archer, with well-concealed collar-bones; he is the subduer of enemies. His arms extend down to his knees; his head is noble, his forehead broad and beautiful, and his bearing majestic.
And then comes one of the most beautiful comparisons:
1.1.11
Samaḥ samavibhaktāṅgaḥ snigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān |
Pīnavakṣā viśālākṣo lakṣmīvān śubhalakṣaṇaḥ ||
Meaning:
His body is perfectly proportioned, every limb harmoniously formed; his complexion is radiant and pleasing. He is powerful, broad-chested and large-eyed, endowed with auspiciousness and all the marks of beauty.
And the face?
Nārada gives an especially striking comparison a few verses later:
विष्णुना सदृशो वीर्ये सोमवत् प्रियदर्शनः ।
कालाग्निसदृशः क्रोधे क्षमया पृथिवीसमः ॥
Viṣṇunā sadṛśo vīrye somavat priyadarśanaḥ |
Kālāgnisadṛśaḥ krodhe kṣamayā pṛthivī-samaḥ ||
Meaning:
“In valour he is like Viṣṇu; in appearance he is as pleasing as the Moon; in anger he is like the fire of cosmic dissolution; in forgiveness he is like the Earth.”
So, interestingly, Nārada does not merely say that Rāma was handsome. He builds a complete visual image:
broad shoulders → powerful arms reaching the knees → conch-shaped neck → strong jaw → broad chest → beautiful forehead → perfectly proportioned limbs → radiant complexion → large eyes → auspicious features → a face pleasing like the Moon.
And this is significant: Vālmīki's first question was essentially “Who is the man possessing all these virtues?” Nārada's answer begins by describing Rāma both inwardly and outwardly—his character, intellect and dharma, followed by the physical form in which those qualities are embodied.
The most relevant verses are Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bāla Kāṇḍa, Sarga 1, verses 9–11. Nārada is describing Rāma to Vālmīki, moving from his character to his physical form.
1.1.9 — Rāma's shoulders, arms, neck and face
Buddhimān nītimān vāgmī śrīmān śatrunibarhaṇaḥ |
Vipulāṃso mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvo mahāhanuḥ ||
Word by word:
बुद्धिमान् — buddhimān — intelligent, wise
नीतिमान् — nītimān — righteous, skilled in conduct and governance
वाग्मी — vāgmī — eloquent speaker
श्रीमान् — śrīmān — glorious, possessing splendour
शत्रुनिबर्हणः — śatrunibarhaṇaḥ — destroyer/subduer of enemies
विपुलांसः — vipulāṃsaḥ — broad-shouldered
महाबाहुः — mahābāhuḥ — mighty-armed, possessing long and powerful arms
कम्बुग्रीवः — kambugrīvaḥ — having a neck like a conch; traditionally indicating the auspicious three lines on the neck
महाहनुः — mahāhanuḥ — strong, prominent jaw/cheeks
So Nārada is saying, in essence:
“Rāma is wise, righteous and eloquent; glorious and the vanquisher of enemies. He has broad shoulders, powerful arms, a beautiful conch-like neck and a strong, noble jaw.”
1.1.10 — His chest, arms, head and forehead
Mahorasko maheṣvāso gūḍhajatrur arindamaḥ |
Ājānubāhuḥ suśirāḥ sulalāṭaḥ suvikramaḥ ||
Word by word:
महोरस्कः — mahoraskaḥ — broad-chested, large-chested
महेष्वासः — maheṣvāsaḥ — mighty archer, wielder of a great bow
गूढजत्रुः — gūḍhajattruḥ — with well-developed/concealed collarbones
अरिन्दमः — arindamaḥ — subduer of enemies
आजानुबाहुः — ājānubāhuḥ — whose arms extend down to the knees
सुशिराः — suśirāḥ — well-formed/noble head
सुललाटः — sulalāṭaḥ — beautiful, broad and well-formed forehead
सुविक्रमः — suvikramaḥ — majestic in stride; possessing great prowess
The phrase ājānubāhuḥ is particularly striking: Rāma's arms are described as reaching to his knees.
1.1.11 — The complete harmony of his body
Samaḥ samavibhaktāṅgaḥ snigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān |
Pīnavakṣā viśālākṣo lakṣmīvān śubhalakṣaṇaḥ ||
Word by word:
समः — samaḥ — even, well-proportioned
समविभक्ताङ्गः — samavibhaktāṅgaḥ — whose limbs are perfectly proportioned and harmoniously formed
स्निग्धवर्णः — snigdhavarṇaḥ — possessing a pleasing, radiant complexion
प्रतापवान् — pratāpavān — powerful, majestic, full of splendour
पीनवक्षाः — pīnavakṣāḥ — broad and full-chested
विशालाक्षः — viśālākṣaḥ — large-eyed, wide-eyed
लक्ष्मीवान् — lakṣmīvān — endowed with splendour, grace and auspicious fortune
शुभलक्षणः — śubhalakṣaṇaḥ — possessing auspicious and beautiful bodily marks
The verse therefore paints a picture of perfect physical proportion rather than merely physical strength. His limbs are balanced, his complexion radiant, his chest broad, his eyes large, and his entire form carries auspiciousness.
The picture that emerges
Putting these three verses together, Nārada's Rāma is:
Broad shoulders → long powerful arms reaching the knees → conch-shaped neck → strong noble jaw → broad chest → well-formed head and forehead → perfectly proportioned limbs → radiant complexion → large eyes → majestic bearing.
And there is something beautiful in Vālmīki's conception: Rāma's physical beauty is inseparable from his inner qualities. Nārada first calls him buddhimān (wise), nītimān (righteous), vāgmī (eloquent), and śrīmān (glorious), and then describes the body that expresses those qualities.
There is also a wonderful verse immediately following this description:
विष्णुना सदृशो वीर्ये सोमवत् प्रियदर्शनः ।
कालाग्निसदृशः क्रोधे क्षमया पृथिवीसमः ॥ १-१-१२ ॥
“In valour he is like Viṣṇu; in appearance he is pleasing like the Moon; in anger he is like the fire of dissolution; and in forgiveness he is like the Earth.”
That verse perhaps gives the finishing touch to the portrait: *the body is magnificent, but the true beauty of Rāma lies in the balance between power, gentleness, anger and forgiveness.*
