The Pyramids of Giza — Buildings That Defied Time

On the edge of Cairo stand the Pyramids of Giza, among the oldest and most extraordinary monuments ever created by human beings.

The Great Pyramid, built for Pharaoh Khufu more than 4,500 years ago, was constructed from enormous quantities of stone. Yet its sides were carefully aligned with the points of the compass, and its builders achieved remarkable precision without modern machinery.

The pyramids were not merely gigantic structures. They were part of an elaborate ancient Egyptian belief system concerning death, kingship and the afterlife.

Thousands of years have passed. Kingdoms have risen and disappeared, languages have changed and civilizations have come and gone.

The pyramids remain.

Perhaps that is their greatest lesson: human hands may be temporary, but human imagination can build something that challenges time itself.
