 How Does a Seed Know When to Grow?

Place a dry seed in your hand. It looks lifeless.

But inside that tiny seed is a living plant waiting for the right conditions.

How does it know when to begin?

The seed does not actually “know” in the way we do. It responds to signals from its surroundings.

The first and most important signal is usually water. When a seed absorbs water, its internal processes become active. Enzymes begin breaking down stored food, providing energy for the tiny embryo inside.

Then come other signals.

Temperature tells the seed whether conditions are suitable for growth. Some seeds also respond to light or darkness, depending on the species.

When the conditions are right, the seed coat breaks open. The first root pushes downward, searching for water and anchoring the plant. Soon the shoot moves upward towards the light.

It is an extraordinary transformation.

A dry seed that appeared to be doing nothing suddenly becomes a growing plant.

And hidden inside that tiny package is enough information to guide its development.

A seed does not think about when to grow.
It simply carries within it the remarkable instructions for life—and responds when the world around it says, “Now.”
