School series 91 victoria falls

Victoria Falls — The Smoke That Thunders

On the Zambezi River, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, lies one of the world's greatest natural spectacles—Victoria Falls.

The river suddenly plunges into a vast gorge, creating a curtain of water more than 100 metres high. The enormous spray rising from the falls can be seen from a great distance, giving rise to its local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders.”

The falls were known to local communities long before the Scottish explorer David Livingstone encountered them in 1855 and named them after Queen Victoria.

But the name cannot capture what nature has created here.

There is sound, movement, mist, rainbows and immense power—all produced by water following its ancient course.

Nature does not need a chisel to create a monument. Sometimes a river is enough.
