The Statue of Liberty — A Symbol of Freedom
Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor is the Statue of Liberty, one of the world's most recognizable monuments.
Presented by France to the United States and dedicated in 1886, the colossal statue depicts a woman holding a torch high above her head. The broken chains at her feet symbolize freedom from oppression.
Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the structural framework developed with the involvement of Gustave Eiffel, the monument was an impressive achievement of 19th-century engineering.
For generations of immigrants arriving by sea, the statue became a welcoming sight—a symbol of a new beginning.
Unlike monuments built to celebrate a king or a military victory, this one represents an idea.
The greatest monuments need not commemorate a person or an event; sometimes they give physical form to a value that belongs to all humanity.
