When Ravana Tried to Lift Mount Kailasa!
Look closely at this incredible Hoysala sculpture. Ravana is shown attempting to lift Mount Kailasa, the sacred abode of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This powerful scene is known as Ravananugraha, the grace of God Shiva towards Ravana.
According to the Ramayana tradition, Ravana was travelling towards Lanka when his aerial journey was obstructed at Mount Kailasa. Filled with pride in his immense strength, he attempted to shake and lift the sacred mountain. God Shiva then pressed the mountain down with His toe, trapping Ravana beneath it.
Realising the supreme power of God Shiva, Ravana surrendered his pride and praised Him with deep devotion. The story beautifully represents the transformation of arrogance into surrender and devotion.
And look at the craftsmanship. The Hoysala sculptors captured this entire dramatic episode in stone, with Ravana struggling below while God Shiva and Goddess Parvati remain above in divine composure.
Nearly 900 years later, the sculpture still tells the same powerful message: no matter how great our strength may be, true greatness lies in surrender before the Supreme.
