The Hindu Scriptural Tradition – Part 1
What is Sanātana Dharma?
The expression Sanātana Dharma is one of the oldest and most profound names for what is today commonly called Hinduism. It is not the name of a religion founded by a single prophet or established at a particular point in history. Rather, it is an eternal way of life rooted in divine wisdom.
The word Sanātana means eternal, beginningless and endless. Dharma is that which upholds, sustains, and harmonizes the universe. Together, Sanātana Dharma means "the Eternal Law" or "the Eternal Way of Righteous Living."
Unlike many world religions, Sanātana Dharma has no single founder, no single sacred book, and no central authority. Instead, it is a vast and living tradition preserved through the Vedas, enriched by the Upaniṣads, explained through the Itihāsas and Purāṇas, systematized by the Darśanas, expressed through the Āgamas, and lovingly interpreted by generations of Ācāryas.
At its heart, Sanātana Dharma teaches that there is one Supreme Reality (Brahman), that every soul (jīva) is eternal, that actions (karma) have consequences, and that the highest goal of life is liberation (mokṣa) through God-realization.
The scriptures are not isolated works but form a beautifully connected body of knowledge.
Śruti reveals eternal truths.
Smṛti explains how to live according to those truths.
Itihāsas teach through inspiring history.
Purāṇas preserve sacred traditions and philosophy.
Āgamas guide temple worship and daily devotion.
Darśanas provide philosophical understanding.
Sampradāyas preserve and transmit this wisdom through living lineages.
This series will explore each of these step by step, helping readers understand not only the individual scriptures but also how they fit together into one magnificent spiritual tradition.
As the mighty banyan tree grows from a tiny seed into countless branches while remaining one tree, so too Sanātana Dharma has blossomed into many scriptures, philosophies, and traditions—yet all remain rooted in the same eternal truth.
