 Sri Vanamamalai Mutt (Thothadri Mutt) – The Ancient Seat of Tenkalai Sri Vaishnavism

Among the great Sri Vaishnava institutions, Sri Vanamamalai Mutt, also known as Thothadri Mutt, occupies a unique place as one of the oldest and most respected Tenkalai Sri Vaishnava monasteries. It is located at Nanguneri (Vanamamalai), Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, associated with the sacred Divya Desam of Sri Vanamamalai Perumal (Thothadrinatha Perumal). 

Origin and Acharya Paramparā

The Mutt traces its origin to Sri Ponnadikkal Jeeyar, the foremost disciple of Sri Manavala Mamunigal. Tradition holds that Manavala Mamunigal instructed Ponnadikkal Jeeyar to establish this Mutt and continue the propagation of Sri Vaishnava teachings. 

Thus, Vanamamalai Mutt represents the continuation of the Manavala Mamunigal lineage, preserving the teachings of:

Sri Pillai Lokacharya

Sri Manavala Mamunigal

The Mutt is inseparably connected with Sri Vanamamalai Divya Desam, one of the eight traditionally recognised Swayam Vyakta Kshetras where the Lord is believed to have manifested by His own divine will.

A special feature of this temple is the daily Thaila Kappu (oil anointment) of the Lord. The sacred oil used in the ritual is collected in the famous Ennai Kinaru (oil well) and is revered by devotees as prasadam.
