Mysore Sri Vaishnava Maṭhas – The Royal and Scholarly Centres of Karnataka
Mysore has been an important centre of Sri Vaishnavism for centuries. The association of the Wadiyar kings with Sri Vaishnava Acharyas, the growth of Sanskrit learning, and the presence of important maṭhas made Mysore a significant spiritual centre.
1. Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakāla Maṭha (Parakāla Mutt)
Among the most prominent Mysore maṭhas is Sri Parakāla Maṭha.
It belongs to the Vadakalai Sri Vaishnava tradition.
It was established by Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakāla Jeeyar, a disciple in the lineage of Sri Vedanta Desika.
The Mutt's headquarters is in Mysore.
The presiding deity is Sri Lakshmi Hayagriva, the Lord of knowledge and wisdom.
The Acharyas of Parakāla Mutt traditionally served as Rajagurus (spiritual preceptors) of the Mysore Wadiyar royal family.
Its contribution includes:
preservation of Vedanta Desika's teachings,
Sanskrit and Vedanta scholarship,
Sri Vaishnava rituals,
guidance of disciples and devotees.
2. Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt (Melkote)
Though located at Melkote, near Mysore, it is closely connected with the religious history of the region.
It is associated with Bhagavad Ramanuja's stay at Melkote.
It represents the continuation of Ramanuja's legacy in Karnataka.
It is connected with the worship of Sri Tirunarayana (Cheluvanarayana Swamy).
3. Other Sri Vaishnava Centres in Mysore Region
Apart from the major maṭhas, Mysore and surrounding areas have many traditional Sri Vaishnava communities and temples where:
Divya Prabandham is recited,
Ubhaya Vedanta is taught,
temple kainkaryams are maintained,
Acharya sambandham is preserved.
